Dual boot Windows + Linux
Install Linux alongside Windows without losing everything.
- Back up your data. Also save the BitLocker recovery key if the disk is encrypted.
- Disable fast startup in Windows (administrator):
powercfg /h off
- In Windows Disk Management, right-click C: → Shrink Volume to free at least 50 GB.
- Boot from the live USB and choose "Install alongside Windows" in the installer.
- If Windows does not appear in GRUB:
sudo os-prober sudo update-grub
⚠️ A major Windows update can sometimes put its own bootloader first again: keep a live USB drive handy.
