Uninstall an application cleanly

Also remove the files it leaves behind.

  1. Quit the application, then drag it from Applications to the Trash.
  2. Look for leftovers in your Library:
    open ~/Library/Application\ Support
    open ~/Library/Preferences
    open ~/Library/Caches
  3. Delete the folders bearing the application's or publisher's name. Do not touch anything else.
  4. For an app installed with Homebrew:
    brew uninstall --zap --cask nom-de-lapp
  5. Easy alternative: AppCleaner (see "Recommended software").
