Create a Linux live USB drive

Try or install any distribution from a USB stick.

  1. Download the ISO from the distribution's official site, then check its SHA-256 checksum.
  2. Simple method: balenaEtcher → Flash from file → choose the drive → Flash.
  3. Multi-ISO method: install Ventoy on the drive once, then just copy your ISOs onto it and pick one at boot.
  4. Terminal method: first identify the right device:
    lsblk -o NAME,SIZE,MODEL,TRAN
  5. Then write the image (replace /dev/sdX with the whole drive, not a partition):
    sudo dd if=distro.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M status=progress conv=fsync
⚠️ A mistake on /dev/sdX can wipe your main disk. Check the size and model with lsblk before confirming.
