Check a disk's health (SMART)

Spot a failing disk before losing your data.

  1. Health status of the physical disks:
    Get-PhysicalDisk | Select-Object FriendlyName, MediaType, HealthStatus, OperationalStatus
  2. Any value other than "Healthy" is a reason to back up immediately.
  3. For SMART details (reallocated sectors, temperature, wear), install CrystalDiskInfo (see "Recommended software").
  4. Check the file system (needs a restart for the system disk):
    chkdsk C: /scan
  5. An SSD showing high wear or a growing number of reallocated sectors should be replaced.
